Continuing Education (CE) is designed to enhance the professional competence and ethical standards of financial services practitioners, including financial advisors and planners. CE is a critical component of maintaining industry knowledge and standards, regulatory compliance, and the ability to serve clients effectively. CE must be relevant and supportive of your professional responsibilities and role.

CE – Need to Know
Annual Requirement (January 1 – December 31)
Each year Institute designation holders (CLU, PFA or CHS) must complete their annual CE requirements. The Annual CE Attestation is due no later than December 31.
Annual CE Attestation (November – December)
Each year Institute designation holders are required to declare that they have satisfied the annual CE requirements (for the previous calendar year). This attestation is completed at the same time you renew your designation through My Portal.
Code of Professional Conduct
To better serve your clients and suppliers, it is important to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct and Explanatory Notes – e.g. Principle 3 (an Institute designation holder shall act competently), which states: “an Institute designation holder shall maintain their competence through appropriate education, training and work experience, as demonstrated by a commitment to continuous learning.”
Annual CE Attestation Submission
CE attestations are completed through My Portal between November and December each year. If you are retired or a student, CE is not applicable to you, nor do you have to complete the Annual CE Attestation.
Institute designation holders who do not complete their annual attestation by the December 31 deadline are putting their designation at risk and may be subject to suspension or termination.
Tracking Your CE
To document your completed CE hours, you may use the tracking system of your choice. Alternatively, you may choose to track your CE directly with Advocis and the Institute, using the CE Tracker, which can be accessed through the Member Portal.
CE Exemptions
Partial or full CE exemptions may be requested for parental leave or medical reasons. All requests are subject to Institute approval and are valid for one year only.
To apply, submit the CE Exemption Form along with supporting documentation. You will be notified in writing once a decision is made.
If your request is denied or does not meet the criteria, your designation may be at risk.
CE Requirements for New Members
CE is not required during the calendar year in which you obtained your designation(s).
